The Tie That Bonds Chapter 16 "What's wrong Mia?" Emily asked as she noticed her friend wasn't talking much. "I was just wondering. . .what happens to people when they die?" "My mommy says they go to Heaven or Heck." "Where's that?" "Well, Heaven is above us, on the clouds, it's where my older brother went when he died in a car accident. Heck is below us." "But there's other countries below us. Are those countries Heck?" Emily shrugged. "I don't know." "So what's the difference between Heaven and Heck?" "My mommy says that Heaven is where all the really good people go. Heck is where all the bad people go." "So who decides who's good and bad?" "God." "Who's he?" "Don't you know anything Mia? God is our Father." Confusion washed over the blue eyed child. "How's that?" "He was the one who made people." "Then who made him?" "His mommy." "Then who made his mommy?" "I don't know. My daddy always says that you're not suppose to question him." "I think you're lying." "I am not." "You are to." "Am not." "Are too." "Am not." "Then prove it." Emily grew silent for a moment. "My mommy and daddy aren't liars Mia." "Then let's ask Trowa. He knows everything." "Fine." The two girls walked into the kitchen to find Trowa starting dinner, and Duo sitting at the kitchen table playing a game of chess with Heero. "Trowa." Mia called and stood by his side. The Latin looked down at the two little girls. "Emily says that there's a guy named God that's our father and that he decides if people go to Heaven or Heck. Is she lying?" "I'm not lying." "I say you are." Heero and Duo's interest was snatched by the question. "First off Amelia, apologize for calling Emily a liar." Trowa started and Mia looked over at her friend. "I told you I wasn't lying." "He didn't say you were right. He just said that I had to say that I was sorry for calling you a liar." "So say it." Trowa pushed. "I'm sorry Emily for calling you a lair. . .now why am I apologizing?" She asked and looked up at the tall man. "Because, she believes in God, therefore to her, she isn't lying." "So there is such a person as God?" Mia interrogated. "Yes, and no." "But you just said that she was right. Now she's not?" "The existence of God is really a question of religion." "What's religion?" "Religion is a set of beliefs that a person has about how the universe came about." "So how did it come about?" "No one really knows, so they're just guessing." "No. God made the universe. It says so in the Bible. I thought you said that Trowa knows everything. He doesn't know anything about God." Emily snapped. "He does too. Maybe you don't know anything and you're too dumb to know that." "Mia." Heero warned quickly. One thing was for sure, the little girl had picked up on his temper. "Sorry." She muttered and turned back to Trowa. "You know about God, don't you?" "Actually, I don't." The young colbat eyes widen in surprise and shock. "I told you." "But you know everything Trowa." "Not everything Mia." "Why don't you know about God?" "Because I don't believe in him." It was Emily's turn to appear shock. She stepped over to the adult and slapped his hand. "Shame on you. You should believe in him." Duo burst into laughter at the fact that Trowa was being scolded by a five year old. "Do you know about God Heero?" Mia asked and looked over at the Japanese man. Heero merely shook his head and returned to his game. "Duo?" "I know about him, but I agree with Trowa about not believing in him." "How do you know about that?" Heero scoffed. "And put my knight back where it was." The American grinned and pulled the white knight from his sleeve. He had taken it when he believed that Heero's full attention was on the two girls and Trowa. "I grew up in a Catholic church. If you want, I can explain everything to her." Duo offered as Heero used the replaced knight to place him in check. "No thanks. Knowing you, you'll have her worshipping you." The braided man laughed at the concept. "Well, after all, I am the god of. . ." Heero smashed Duo's hand on the table before he could finish. "Hey! Easy Heero, that's my good hand." "You should come spend the night Saturday and go with us to church in the morning." Emily offered suddenly. "My mom says that it's a sad thing when a kid doesn't know anything about God." "Trowa, Heero, can I go." "Sure." "No." All eyes fell on Heero. "There's no sense in wasting your time learning about that crap." "Mia, why don't you and Emily go back to your room and color?" "Are you going to fight again?" She asked softly and looked up into the deep green eyes. "Because if you are, I don't have to go." "We're not going to fight." Trowa assured. "We're just going to talk." "There's nothing to talk about." Heero snapped and laid Duo's king down. "Again?!?" The American cried in anguish. "Let's go again. This time I'll win." "Mia please." "Okay." She said sorrowfully and lead Emily back to her room. Trowa looked up at his lover. "I'm not arguing. I'm not discussing. I've said all I've had to say." "Heero, she has questions that we can't answer, it's only right that she. . ." "Trowa, no." "Fine. If you won't let her go, then Duo can teach her." "Don't pull me into this." Duo begged and waited for Heero to finish setting up. "What's the big deal?" "The big deal is that if we let her go, Sharon will be constantly trying to push her religion on to us. I'm not putting up with it. She's already trying to make you leave me, take Mia, and find a woman." "Let's play something." Emily suggested and rummaged through Mia's toys. The brown haired girl slumped onto her bed and listened to Heero and Trowa's words. They were much softer this time. . .and a lot more calmer. "How about this?" Emily asked and held up the memory match game. "I don't feel like playing that." "Then what do you want to play?" "I don't want to play. I want to hear what they're saying." Emily grew silent and tried to listen, but all she heard was incoherent voices. "You can't hear anything." "Yes I can. I can hear what they're saying." "How?" "I don't know how, I just can hear them. Maybe you got too much ear wax in your ears." Emily slid her index finger into her ear and rubbed quickly. She pulled it out and looked at her clean finger. "Uh-uh. I don't have ear wax. Forget about them. Let's play." "I don't want to play." "Fine, then let me practice on you." "Practice what?" Emily picked up the crayons that were laying on the small table near the middle of the room. "I'm practicing to be like the lady in the circus that throw knives." "But we're not allowed to play with knives." "That's why I practice with crayons. Wanna help me?" "What do I have to do?" The blonde haired girl looked around the room for a moment. "Just stand against your door. You can be my helper." Shrugging, Mia stood and walked over to her door. "No. You have to put your hands and feet like this." As she spoke, she spread her legs as wide as they could go, and stretched out her hands. Mia followed suit and Emily stepped to the opposite side of the room. "Ready?" "Yeah." "Okay, here we go." She threw the first crayon at the awaiting girl. Just before the crayon hit, Mia jumped out of the way. "What are you doing?" "You were going to hit me." "No I wasn't." "Yes you were. It was coming right at me." "It's suppose to look like it's coming at you. . .but then it moves and hits the door." "No it wouldn't have." "Yes it would. Watch. Let me do it again, and I'll prove it." "Why don't you let me throw them at you then?" "Because I've been practicing and know how to do it. You don't." "I bet I can throw better than you." "I bet you can't." "Give me the crayons and watch." "No. Me first. Then I'll let you." "Okay." With that, Mia walked back over to the door and waited for her friend to throw the next crayon. "Are you sure they won't hit me?" "I promise." Just as she started to throw the next pretend knife, Duo appeared in the hall. After surveying the scene, he quickly picked Mia up, just as the crayon smacked against the door, causing a red blotch to appear on the white painted wood. "What are you doing?" The American asked sternly. "I was helping Emily practice to become a knife thrower like the lady in the circus." "With crayons?" "We can't play with knives." "Are you aware that you could lose an eye by doing that?" Duo wondered and set the little girl he was holding on the bed. "No. Emily said that they wouldn't hit me, just
the door."
